Pakistan in February: Spring Approaches, Almond Blossoms in Hunza, and Lahore's Food Culture
Plan your trip
February is Pakistan’s most aesthetically charged month in the north — the almond trees of Hunza Valley begin blooming in the most remote mountain scenery on Earth, creating pink blossoms against snowcapped peaks. The cultural heartland cities (Lahore, Islamabad, Multan) are at their finest with cool, clear weather. And the preparations for spring begin across the country.
Weather & Conditions
Lahore and Punjab: 8–22°C. Warmer than January. Clear days with minimal fog. Afternoons are warm enough for shirt-sleeve exploring.
Islamabad: 6–18°C. Spring is beginning — the Margalla Hills behind the city are green.
Karachi: 18–26°C. Still pleasant coastal weather. The best month for Karachi’s beaches.
Hunza Valley (Gilgit-Baltistan): -2 to 12°C. Almond blossom season begins in late February. Snow on the peaks, pink blossoms in the valley. Accessible by flight to Gilgit then road.
Peshawar: 8–20°C. Comfortable.
What to Do
Almond blossom, Hunza Valley: The almond orchards below Karimabad and in the villages around Altit and Baltit Forts bloom in late February. The combination of pink blossom, terraced apricot orchards, and the Karakoram giants (Rakaposhi 7,788m visible from the valley) is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Staying at the Eagle’s Nest guesthouse above Karimabad for sunset and dawn views over the valley is a Pakistan essential. Fly from Islamabad to Gilgit Airport (the most dramatic commercial flight approach in aviation — through mountain passes), then 2 hours by road.
Lahore’s Sufi shrines: February’s clear evenings are ideal for Lahore’s Sufi qawwali (devotional music) sessions. The Data Ganj Bakhsh shrine (the city’s most important Islamic site) holds qawwali every Thursday night. The Mian Mir shrine in the Old City and the shrines of Anarkali also have regular devotional music.
Multan — City of Saints and Sufis: The city of Multan in southern Punjab is one of Pakistan’s oldest — over 5,000 years of continuous settlement. The shrines of Bahauddin Zakariya (a 13th-century Sufi saint) and Shah Rukhne-Alam are surrounded by the tile-covered architecture distinctive to southern Punjab. February is an excellent month for Multan.
Taxila Archaeological Site: The ancient city of Taxila near Rawalpindi was a major center of Gandharan Buddhist art and civilization from the 6th century BCE through the 5th century CE. The Taxila Museum and the ruins of Bhir Mound, Sirkap, and the Dharmarajika Stupa are accessible. February’s comfortable temperatures make the outdoor archaeological sites entirely pleasant.
The Grand Trunk Road (Delhi to Kabul heritage route): The historical route connecting Pakistan’s cities — from Lahore through Rawalpindi and onward — is a journey through layered civilizations. February is an excellent month for this road trip.
Festivals & Events
Basant (variable — February Lahore): The kite festival (when permitted). Lahore’s rooftops fill with kite-flyers, and the city hums with the sound of cutting threads. Check current permissions.
Valentine’s Day (February 14): Observed in Pakistan’s urban centers with some celebration.
Practical Tips
Hunza in February: the almond blossom timing varies by 1–2 weeks annually depending on temperature. The Hunza Tourism Facebook groups post real-time blossom updates. Flights to Gilgit from Islamabad are weather-dependent and frequently cancelled — build 2 buffer days into any Gilgit-area itinerary.
Gilgit flights operate on small turboprops (ATR-72, Fokker) through mountain corridors. The visual experience is extraordinary; the cancellation rate in poor weather is significant.
Pakistan travel registration: some foreign travelers register with their embassy before visiting remote areas. The Gilgit-Baltistan tourism authority issues separate permits for certain trekking areas.
