Pakistan in May: Trekking Season Opens, K2 Base Camp, and Khunjerab Pass Clears
Plan your trip
May opens Pakistan’s most spectacular chapter: the high mountains. Khunjerab Pass — the Chinese border crossing at 4,693m — clears and opens for the season. Mountaineering expeditions to K2, Broad Peak, and Gasherbrum I and II leave Skardu for base camp. Trekkers begin arriving for the Concordia/K2 Base Camp trek — one of the world’s finest mountain walks. The northern valleys are brilliantly green, and the Karakoram Highway is at its most dramatic.
Weather & Conditions
Lahore and Punjab: 30–40°C. Hot. Not the month for lowland tourism.
Islamabad: 26–35°C. Warm to hot. Still functional but requiring heat management.
Hunza Valley: 12–24°C. Ideal. Apple blossoms follow the apricots in May. The landscape is green and spectacular.
Skardu: 10–22°C. The gateway to K2. Expeditions preparing for the summer season.
Karakoram (Concordia, K2 base camp area): 2–12°C at lower elevations, colder with altitude. Snow at high elevation. The trek is open.
Khunjerab Pass: Opens in May — typically mid-May. 4,693m elevation. Cold but accessible.
What to Do
K2 Base Camp / Concordia trek (16–22 days): The trek up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia — the amphitheater surrounded by four 8,000m peaks (K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II) — is arguably the finest mountain trek in the world. The scale is incomprehensible until you’re in it. Start from Skardu, fly or drive. Require a licensed guide, porter, and cook. The trek camps at Payu, Urdukas, and Concordia before reaching K2 Base Camp at 5,150m. Total cost $800–2,500+ depending on group size and operators.
Nanga Parbat Base Camp via Fairy Meadows: The Killer Mountain’s fairy meadow approach is accessible by May. The 3-hour uphill walk from the jeep road end takes you to flowered meadows with the 8,126m summit directly above. A shorter and less technical alternative to the Baltoro/K2 experience.
Khunjerab Pass and China border: Drive the Karakoram Highway to Khunjerab Pass in May — the first weeks after opening. The valley sides of Gojal are covered in wildflowers at this time. The border post itself is at 4,693m with views in all directions. Cross to the Chinese side for the day (visa required for China) or simply reach the pass and return.
Hunza Valley upper valley exploration (Passu, Gulmit): The upper Hunza Valley above Karimabad — Passu with its extraordinary Passu Cones serrated peaks, the Gulmit village and Borith Lake — are in May’s perfect spring condition. Walk the Passu Glacier for close-up glacier access.
Lahore (last comfortable window if early May): The first week of May is the final comfortable Lahore window before the heat overwhelms. Early May mornings are manageable.
Festivals & Events
Shandur Polo Festival preparations: Teams from Gilgit and Chitral begin preparing for the July festival at Shandur Pass.
International Workers’ Day (May 1): Public holiday.
Practical Tips
K2 Base Camp trek logistics: requires significant preparation — fitness, altitude acclimatization (start in Skardu, acclimatize 2–3 days at Skardu’s 2,228m), and a properly equipped guide company. Contact companies like Hunza Tours, Pamir Tours, or Trek & Mountaineer. Group treks are more cost-effective than private expeditions.
Permits: the Karakoram trekking area requires a Trekking Permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Authority. Your operator handles this.
Skardu flights: PIA and AirBlue operate Islamabad-Skardu (1 hour through mountain passes). Weather cancellations are common. Build 2-day buffer for Skardu connections.
Who May Is For
The core audience is adventure travelers and serious trekkers who have specifically planned around the K2 Base Camp or Nanga Parbat approach. Mountaineers on expedition to the Karakoram 8,000m peaks. Karakoram Highway road trip travelers. And anyone who has specifically sought out Pakistan as the destination for the world’s most dramatic mountain terrain.
