Tanzania in October: Migration Returns South, Zanzibar Peaks, Shoulder Season Deals
Plan your trip
October is a transitional month that rewards savvy Tanzania travelers. The wildebeest herds are completing their southward return to the Serengeti’s interior, with the calving grounds beckoning. Zanzibar’s east coast is in its finest condition — the sea is calm, the water is clear, and the northeast trade wind will arrive soon to make December–February the peak period. Safari prices are below their July–August maximum. October is genuinely excellent value.
Weather & Conditions
Serengeti (Central and Southern): 22–30°C. The dry season continues through October before the short rains arrive in November. Game viewing is excellent with short grass.
Ngorongoro: 16–24°C. Dry and clear. October is one of the crater’s best months — visitors are fewer than July–August.
Zanzibar: 26–30°C. The southeast monsoon (kusi) has fully ended. The east coast (Paje, Jambiani) is in ideal condition — warm, clear water, minimal wind. The best month to be on Zanzibar’s beaches.
Dar es Salaam: 26–30°C. Warm and dry.
Mount Kilimanjaro: October is actually a good month — before the short rains. The dry season clarity continues.
What to Do
Southern Serengeti and Ndutu — wildebeest return: The southward migration brings the herds back through the central and southern Serengeti in October and November. This is the quieter, less celebrated phase of the migration cycle, but the concentrations of wildebeest (and the predators following them) are significant. Ndutu area camps offer excellent October value.
Zanzibar east coast: October may be the single best month to be on Zanzibar’s east coast. Paje and Jambiani’s beaches are calm, warm, and relatively uncrowded compared to the December–February northeast monsoon peak. Snorkeling the Mnemba Atoll, diving the offshore reefs, and simply being on the beach at sunset are October pleasures.
Tarangire National Park: October is excellent for Tarangire — the dry season concentrates wildlife around the Tarangire River in spectacular numbers. Elephant herds of hundreds, massive baobab trees, and good lion and leopard viewing. Tarangire is often combined with Serengeti and Ngorongoro in the Northern Circuit itinerary. Often overlooked but genuinely world-class.
Lake Manyara National Park: The flamingos on Lake Manyara, the tree-climbing lions (an unusual behavior specific to Manyara’s lions), and the forest zone along the escarpment make Manyara a half-day or full-day addition to any Northern Circuit itinerary. October conditions are excellent.
Stone Town historical exploration: Zanzibar’s UNESCO World Heritage old city — the carved doors, the Arab-built mansions, the slave market site (Anglican Cathedral), the Freddie Mercury birthplace — rewards slow exploration at any time of year. October is one of the easier months for it — not too hot, not rainy.
Festivals & Events
Tanzanian Independence Day (October 9): National public holiday. Celebrations across the country.
Zanzibar northeast trade wind arrival (late October): The shift in wind patterns marks the coming beach high season. By late October, the northeast trade (kaskazi) begins establishing — the condition that makes December–February the peak beach season.
Practical Tips
October prices are significantly below July–August peak — camps may be 20–35% cheaper. Many operators offer October-specific promotions targeting shoulder season travelers.
Tarangire in October is genuinely extraordinary for elephant concentrations — often 1,000+ elephants in a single day’s game drive. If Tarangire isn’t on your Northern Circuit itinerary, October is the month to add it.
Zanzibar October accommodation: book 4–6 weeks ahead for east coast properties. The season is growing in demand — October Zanzibar is becoming better known.
